PET-CT Instructions for Patients

For ALL PET-CT patients:

Your doctor has requested that you undergo a PET-CT scan. Stockton MRI will contact you to schedule and confirm your PET-CT scan as well as to review the following instructions:

  1. Important: Do NOT eat or drink for the 6 hours before your scheduled appointment (water and your medications are OK). Do NOT drink coffee.
  2. Important: If you are unable to keep your scheduled appointment, contact Stockton MRI as soon as possible at 209-466-2000. The radiotracer dose you will receive will have been ordered in advance and prepared specifically for you as scheduled.
  3. No heavy exercising for the 24 hours before your scan.
  4. Your PET-CT scan will take about 2 hours to complete. Wear warm and comfortable clothing, for example, sweats without zippers or metal.
  5. In order for your PET-CT scan to have the best possible results, follow a low-carbohydrate diet for one day prior to your scan:

    Proteins and vegetables

    Fish, Seafood (not breaded)

    Chicken (not breaded)


    Red meat

    Eggs, cheese, cottage cheese, milk

    Peanut Butter

    Non-starchy vegetables (lettuce, tomato, peppers, green beans, broccoli, cauliflower, mushrooms, peas, greens, spinach).

    Fruit, fruit juice, jelly, jams

    Bread, rolls, cake, tortillas

    Rice, pasta

    Soft drinks

    Yogurt, cereal, oatmeal

    Chips, crackers, popcorn

    Alcoholic drinks, beer, wine

    Desserts, candy

    Pizza dough, breading

    Starchy vegetables (potatoes, corn, onions, carrots)
